Reactions of Cadmium
Reactions with water
Cadmium does not react with water.
Reactions with air
Cadmium readily burns in air to produce cadmium(II) oxide.
  2Cd(s) + O2(g)2CdO(s)
Reactions with halogens
Cadmium reacts with fluorine, bromine and iodine to produce cadmium(II) dihalides.
  Cd(s) + F2(g)CdF2(s)
  Cd(s) + Br2(g)CdBr2(s)
  Cd(s) + I2(g)CdI2(s)
Reactions with acids
Cadmium dissolves slowly in dilute sulphuric acid to form solutions containing the Cd(II) ion and hydrogen gas.
  Cd(s) + H2SO4(aq)Cd2+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + H2(g)
Reactions with bases
Cadmium will not dissolve in aqueous alkalis.
